Visitation to national parks hits record high in 2023, solidifying ecotourism as a top preference among travelers, according to Ministry of Tourism of Brazil, 2024.

Brazil eco-tourism saw the number booming in 2023. With a total audience of 11.8 million people, the number represents a 15% increase compared to the previous year.

The Tijuca National Park, located in the heart of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), remains the leader in the visitation ranking. In 2023, the park reached the historic milestone of over 4 million visitors for the first time. The park saw an increase from 3,542,778 visitors in 2022 to 4,464,257 in the last year. Its trails, waterfalls, and panoramic views continue to captivate both Brazilians and foreigners, offering experiences for various types of visitors.

Foreign visitors love to visit national parks

Do not know where to visit in Brazil? National parks stand out as some of the top destinations for Brazilian and foreign visitors, accounting for 45% of the total visitors among all types of federal conservation units in the country. Approximately three out of every four parks in Brazil were able to monitor their visitation, indicating efficient monitoring coverage.

In addition to national parks, other categories of conservation units have been highlighted year after year in visitor records, such as environmental protection areas, extractive reserves, biological reserves, and ecological stations, showcasing the diversity of options available to tourists in the country.
